New York City Adventure | 2018

New York City in about 24 nonstop hours. That's how you do it, right? Well, when you are with family and friends who are chosen family, nonstop often means: Please don't end.

Until next time . . .

These Blue Waters

These blue waters are my home. Where I began. The backdrop. The main character. The scene of all my life for eighteen years. I rushed back to capture this new life with an old friend who's more like a little sister, as she and her love begin their new roles as parents, surrounded by love, light and these blue waters.

Together

Surrounded by waves or blankets, doesn't it all seem so much better when you are together, with the ones you love?

Summer Baby

Oh, the sweetness of summer. To put your feet in the sand and splash in the ocean. To sip homemade lemonade and come home exhausted from camp. To wander from room to room with your new, little babe, adoring him and pouring over every feature and face he makes. These photos are all that, and more.

A Saturday Evening at Home

Backyards, brothers, mothers, the kitchen table, games. The bathtub, story-time, baby chicks, football. Forsythia, bare feet, bar-b-q, kisses. Newlyweds, blueberry dessert, the swing set, forever.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful, busy, and loving every-day with me.

A Saturday Afternoon in New York

Meeting this fellow Long Islander, change maker, mover and shaker, and her talented and awesome husband a few days before the birth of their first child was easy. Yes. Easy. They had just moved into their temporary apartment only a few days before I arrived, and it was no sweat. This couple is so used to being nomads, going where the political or activism winds should take them, they truly embody the idea that "home" is simply wherever they are when they are together. I send them both much love and luck on their new journey with their new traveling partner, a healthy baby girl. xo

Two Seasons

Two Seasons

We met during two very different seasons. Summer, a time for growth. Winter, a time for hibernation. A perfect metaphor for pregnancy and infancy. This little one shines with that truth, too. She has been kissed by the sun's rays and embraced by loving arms in a warm shelter. Stories like these make my heart sing. Life is beautiful. The cycle of the seasons is in us all. This family is simply wonderful.

City Splendor

I make it no small secret that I miss my city life. I am full of gratitude for our life in the country, but there is no mistaking the pull I feel when I get into Boston. I love the architecture, the stoops, the diversity, the pace. I love walking out your front door into anything and everything possible. So it was a great and refreshing opportunity to come document this absolutely beautiful mother and son. Please take a moment to enjoy their love and happiness, so easy to capture; perfectly complimenting this splendid morning in the city I love.

A Saturday in September

I'm a pretty big fan of this family, and the photos should easily explain why . . . these four are awesome. Plain and simple.

What is truly worth noting is that when Momma and I spoke about the session, she knew in her heart that this time, this "Right Now" in her family's story, was deserving of being captured. She was fully aware of the sweetness within the regular, the daily-life, the grind, the to-and-fro of it all. She didn't want to let it slip away.

So we captured a piece of it.

A Saturday Afternoon in Massachusetts

Taking on another photographer's family, and a stunning and brilliant photographer whom I respect and admire (and who I am envious of her amazing use of low-light), is a big, big, big challenge. I know she has done it all in her home and done it smashingly. I certainly wasn't about to set off to even begin to out-do her in any way. For one, that just ain't me. Secondly, why try and do something she has already done. Instead, as a photo-momma myself, I just figured I'd focus on her, since I know she's not in nearly enough of the photos she takes of her family, as am I. I wanted to focus on the whole-family, and the regular, and the simple. What we got was nothing short of awesome. Jump rope games, popcorn, couch forts and a cello concert, just to name a few of the beautiful moments that popped up. Does mom know light? But of course. And we moved to capture the setting sun for some informal and totally imperfect portraits near the end because photographers help photographers out and she wasn't about to let me miss her magic backyard golden hour.

Cara's work is here. You should totally look her up for family portraiture.

The Birthday Present

The Birthday Present

This wonderful and beautiful family reached out to me to see if I would be open to being their oldest's thirteenth birthday present. Wait? What? How does that work? Actually, it works beautifully! For her birthday, and a big one at that, she had requested to have a photographer come and photograph all the people and the activities in her life that she loves. It was a brilliant gift idea and I loved being art directed by this budding visual artist. Some of her requests were to get images of her knitting with her Yia Yia, as well as practicing piano for her. Collecting eggs and caring for their chickens with her Pappous. She wanted images of her and her family interacting, loving each other, snuggling up with their puppy, and just doing all the things that make her thirteen year old heart happy. Funny thing is, those very things make this thirty-seven year old's heart happy too!

Nothing Like New

These smiles, these big beautiful smiles say it all. Nothing like a new baby. Nothing like your first. What better way to celebrate the newness, love, and joy then by spending an entire afternoon gazing, snuggling, loving up their new son.

A Saturday At Home

I loved our maternity session this summer. Running and playing on the beach, getting to know this active and awesome family. And I loved to switch it up and be at home with them on a late fall Saturday morning, getting a feel for all the love and fun that surrounds this beautiful and oh-so-happy baby. Just such a wonderful, relaxed, and loving crew.

The Farmer's Market

I raised my first two babies in the city, so I will always have a soft spot for new families who begin this way as well. I loved sitting on our stoop, watching the world go by. I loved pushing my girls in the stroller all over town. I loved visiting our Farmer's Market each week and shopping in the Square. Everything I loved to do as a new mom was set in the city.

Perhaps that is why this session was one of my favorites of the year, and probably up there for all time. This beautiful family, their gorgeous little guy and super sweet dog took me on a walk through their neighborhood, shared with me their favorite little corners of the city, and just reminded me so much of what my family was like, back when we began, back in our city days. I was honored and excited to spend the afternoon with them, to capture this amazing time, be with people who appreciate the same kind of love and life that I hold dear, in the city and beyond.

Art Walk

You can't deny the power of serendipity, when it takes over, and makes a regular walk in the park that much more. We quite literally stumbled upon an interactive sculpture walk at Maudslay the morning of our shoot. It gave these little ones so much to do and it gave my regular haunt a whole new dimension. Or read it this way: Public art is fun and so it this family.

Milkweed

This fall has been one for the record books. And this session was such a blast. The Yin to my Yang, three boys, football, hiking, climbing, jumping and then ending with milkweed. It felt like we discovered a beautiful secret, taking autumn's bounty and spreading seeds for future adventure and growth.

Fall on the Farm

Three blue-eyed boys. A million bright, yellow leaves. A herd of sweet dairy cows. So much fun.
